After that, he moved to Modesto, CA., where he went to high school. Randy fell in love with racing at the Stockton 99 Speedway in CA, attending the the races every Friday night where they ran winged modifieds and sportsman. Eventually, Randy came back to Santa Fe, went to work for Furrs Supermarket in 1969 as a meat clerk, got married and was recruited to Los Alamos as an apprentice meat cutter for Piggly Wiggly. There, he became a journeyman meat cutter, living there for 2 years while having had a son and a daughter. Soon after that, Randy moved to Albuquerque, where he worked for Piggly Wiggly until 1980.

Randy raced the #96 '57 chevy hugger orange street stock in the mid 70's at Speedway Park and Albuquerque Raceway. Cliff Odom drove the car #14 as a late model a few times before Randy bought it in Espanola from Red Johnson, who sponsored Randy's OK tires. Randy also ended up buying the # 96, '67 Chevelle minus engine that Cliff drove. At the time, Randy was only 23 years old, racing with men who were both older and more experienced, but he held his own with most of them. Randy's son, Randy Carter the 2nd, raced the #16 hobby stock at Duke City Raceway before it closed. Randy II now races at Hollywood Hills Speedway.
