Dan "Billy Buzzard" Hunter
I started racing in 1966 in Albuquerque. I got started by the help with Wild Bill Lynch, and Batman Bob Ross. My first car was a 1949 Ford, Jolopy(spelling) at Speedway Park in Albuquerque. I stopped racing in 1992. I did get in a racecar since then a time or two, but with my heart surgery, all the jerking kind of puts pressure on my chest. I am still into racing, I have helped my oldest son Monte Hunter in Albuquerque, and my other son Dan Jr. a little this year until he had to sell his car. I still play around with a racecar, building a 1967 Chevelle as a vintage race car, just to show and have sitting around. We have a car show/fair of some sort here in Hobbs, called "Hobbs August Nights", that I want to put into a car show sometime.
I've won a lot of trophies: a champion ship in 1971, and again in 1978, mid-season, and ending-season both years, high points jackets, and best of show car for my sons Malibu here in Hobbs in 2003.
I got into racing because I wanted to race since I was 13, and got the chance when I moved to Albuquerque. So I gave it a shot and the rest was history. The truth to the saying: "It's in the blood". My 2 older sons got the bug, and now my son David age 9, is wanting to race now.
I raced at Speedway Park, Duke City Raceway, Grants Speedway, and Cardinal Motor Speedway in Eunice, New Mexico in a special mechanic's race.
And that about covers it all. I can't think of anything else to put on here, just that the old time can't be brought back. Them good old days are gone. Wish they could come back! Racing back then was fun. Used to spend $20.00 to go racing for me and my family, and could bring home$175.00 for winning. Now you gotta spend $175.00+ and only win $20.00.
